How can hypnosis help sleep discorders?

Hypnosis can be an effective tool for sleep disorders. It has been studied as a potential treatment for sleep disorders, including insomnia, and research suggests that it may be an effective complementary therapy for some individuals.

A meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis in 2015 found that hypnosis was associated with significant improvements in sleep quality, sleep latency (the amount of time it takes to fall asleep), and total sleep time in individuals with insomnia. The study concluded that hypnosis may be a useful adjunct to traditional treatments for insomnia, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).

However, it’s important to note that not all individuals respond to hypnosis in the same way, and it’s important to seek out a qualified and licensed healthcare professional like myself, who is trained in hypnosis and has experience treating sleep disorders to ensure that treatment is safe and effective.

According to the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2007 found that hypnosis was effective in improving sleep quality and reducing the time it took participants to fall asleep compared to a control group. In addition, the study suggested that hypnosis may be a viable treatment option for individuals with insomnia who are resistant to other forms of treatment.

What are the consequences of sleep deprivation?

Last year I read Matt Walker’s excellent book “Why We Sleep” and can thoroughly recommend it as a wealth of insight into the importance of sleep for our physical and mental health. The book presents a compelling argument for the importance of sleep and highlights the serious consequences of chronic sleep deprivation. It is an important read for anyone interested in optimising their health and well-being. Matt also has a super podcast and was recently a guest on Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO.

Some of the key takeaways from the book “Why we Sleep” for are:

  1. Sleep is essential for learning and memory: During sleep, our brains consolidate and strengthen memories, which helps us learn and remember new information.
  2. Lack of sleep can have serious health consequences: Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to a range of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even some forms of cancer.
  3. Sleep is important for emotional regulation: Getting enough sleep helps regulate our emotions and improve our ability to cope with stress.
  4. Sleep deprivation impairs cognitive function: Lack of sleep can impair our ability to focus, make decisions, and react quickly, which can have serious consequences in situations such as driving or operating heavy machinery.
  5. Sleep is essential for physical performance: Sleep deprivation can impair athletic performance and increase the risk of injury.
  6. Our society is chronically sleep-deprived: Many people in our society are not getting enough sleep, which is contributing to a range of health problems and impairments in cognitive and physical function.
  7. Sleep is a biological need, not a luxury: Getting enough sleep is just as important for our health as eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise.

Prioritising sleep can increase your lifespan.

There are many reasons you may want to improve your sleep health. There is growing evidence in the scientific community that there is a strong correlation between sleep and longevity indicating that getting enough high-quality sleep throughout your life may help increase your overall lifespan. A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2009 followed 10,308 civil servants in the UK over a period of 20 years. The study found that those who reported sleeping for fewer than five hours or more than nine hours per night had a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who reported sleeping for seven hours per night.

If you are struggling with sleep issues, working with a sleep coach may be a valuable investment in your health and well-being. A sleep coach can provide personalised guidance and support to help you identify and address the underlying factors that may be contributing to your sleep issues. Through techniques such as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, relaxation techniques, and sleep hygiene education, and in my case hypnosis, a sleep coach can help you develop healthy sleep habits that promote better sleep quality and quantity.

(need to rework these blogs ideally to talk more about the outcomes not just the facts ie – giving them tips and tools to use now, some value in reading the blog itself is great with stats and interesting facts, but to dig deeper – why do people WANT to improve their sleep, not to sleep better, they want to feel awake, be more focused and organised at work, stop feeling sluggish in the morning, concentrate better, perform better, be a better partner and parent etc. Things to discuss with all blogs soon. I would advise we don’t publish these blogs until we have the sleep programme 100% ready which I need a little more time on as most my time is spent on SEO tasks as per 2023 tactics each month at the moment which I will be updating you with when we catch up)

I had got in the habit of staying up later and later in order to claw back a bit of time, and felt tremendous pressure to make every minute productive.  Once in bed, I often struggled to sleep – instead trying to fight off problems and worries from the day. I didn’t feel there was much that would be likely to shift the dial for me. I had read lots about sleep and how important it is, but somehow felt unable to put into practice the knowledge I had gained; the more I learned, the less motivated I felt because the problem seemed so entrenched and I was stuck. However, when I met with Joanne, I felt immediately at ease. I felt in safe hands from the start. I had no idea what to expect from hypnotherapy, but to my surprise by the time we got to that aspect of the programme it felt completely natural and led to fresh insights.

I have never been great with sleep, but at the point I met with Joanne things were as bad as they have ever been; busy high pressure high profile job, three small children, urgent deadlines and minimal time to myself. Joanne has helped me to find clarity and perspective, and following the programme I feel that I have gained agency to make better choices around sleep and prioritising my own time in a different way. And when in bed, I am able to use the tips and techniques Joanne has shared to fall asleep without being assaulted with stresses and worries from the day
